LAKELAND, FL (June 8, 2011) – The City of Lakeland is pleased to announce that the T.Mims Corp. Red, White & Kaboom Independence Celebration will take place at Lake Mirror on Friday, July 1, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. with music and a breathtaking fireworks display dazzling the crowd at 9 p.m.

Tom Mims, President of T. Mims Corporation said, “We are pleased to sponsor Red, White & Kaboom again this year.  It is an excellent opportunity for our community to come together in celebration of our great country and it is free to the public.” Mims added, “We will be continuing our Chow for Now canned food drive to benefit Volunteers In Service to the Elderly so we want each spectator to bring at least one can of food for Viste.”

The evening’s main entertainment will include live music from Channel Z Band.  The Channel Z Band has been in existence since 1997 and is a five piece band with a current member compliment that has been in force for nearly eight years.   A culmination of many diverse and augmenting talents allows Channel Z to be a notch or two above your average Pop Rock Cover Band.  The Channel Z Band continues to perform numerous events in Central Florida.  They are sure to be a crowd pleaser with their diverse song list that spans from the 60’s to current pop favorites and includes hits from the Beatles to the latest from Katy Perry.

There will be a guest appearance from Derik Thomas.  Thomas is a talented student at Lakeland’s Harrison School for the Arts.  He first began playing shows in early 2009 and in 2010 he won the Earthday Networks “Song for Earth” competition.  He got to perform at the 2010 Earthday Climate Rally on the National Mall in Washington DC alongside Sting, John Legend and The Roots.

The evening will also include a showcase performance from the award winning 2011-2012 Taken By Surprise Step Team.  This talented group of young ladies have performed at many Central Florida venues and continue to dazzle the crowds at step competitions.

There will be a variety of food and drink vendors around Lake Mirror so bring a blanket and enjoy the live music and a dramatic display of fireworks over the lake.  The evening is free to the public and everyone attending is encouraged to bring at least one food item to benefit Chow for Now. All City parking garages will be open for T.Mims Corp. Red, White & Kaboom.

Lakeland, FL – The Lakeland Flying Tigers will host the 4^th of July celebration at Joker Marchant Stadium on Monday, July 4.  Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance for the best seat locations and to avoid lines.  Tickets for July 4th are available by calling the Flying Tigers at (863) 686-8075.  Box seats are $7 and reserved seats are $6 and seniors 55 and over and children 14 and under receive a $1.00 discount.  Parking is FREE.
The Flying Tigers will take on the Dunedin Blue Jays in a Florida State League north-division match-up.  Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and the gates to Marchant Stadium will open at 4:00 p.m.   During the game the Flying Tigers will have holiday picnic themed games, contests, music and fun.  The team will be wearing special patriotic red, white and blue jerseys. There will also be live music following the game.
The dueling fireworks spectacular will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.  There will be two amazing fireworks displays skyrocketing at the same time choreographed to patriotic music.  The shows are sponsored by The City of Lakeland, Lakeland Electric, The Ledger and Hall Communications and will be displayed by Bell’s Fireworks Display Company.

Red, White & Kaboom Independence Celebration will take place at Lake Mirror on Saturday, July 3, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:20 p.m. with music and a breathtaking fireworks display dazzling the crowd at 9 p.m.

The evening’s entertainment will include music from the popular band Williams Road.  The band’s five seasoned musicians bring an eclectic mix of experience and variety.  Their collective presence on the local music scene has enlivened some of the best music venues and downtown events in Lakeland over the last 10 years.  The band’s influences and set lists include a wide range of music from classics like the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Bob Marley and Billy Joel to newer material from U2, Coldplay, Train and Five for Fighting.  The band’s take on acoustic and rock favorites is sure to please the old and the young.

   Start the weekend off July 3rd at First Friday at 4pm-8pm in the streets of downtown. Then end the night at Lake Mirror with the Red. White and Kaboom fireworks display over Lake Mirror. Saturday night guests of the Terrace will receive tickets to the Lakeland Flying Tigers game vs. the Tampa Yankees at Joker Marchant Stadium followed by a spectacular fireworks show.

But, before that you can enjoy the fun planned for First Friday around Munn Park and along Kentucky & Tennessee Avenue. We’ll start First Friday a little earlier than usual, because, well it’s a holiday!  (4pm-8pm) So get an early start downtown and plan to play at First Friday, grab a bite to eat in one of the many cool downtown restaurants, then walk over to Lake Mirror to catch a little Millhopper and of course the fireworks! Additional outdoor seating will be available on Kentucky Avenue for diners, so there’s no excuse why you can’t come and enjoy dinner!

Kentucky Ave will be closed to make room for the fun activities like bounce houses, kiddie train rides, street chalk, cake eating contest sponsored by Fresco’s Bakery & Bistro, face painting and other activities planned by the merchants and DLP members.  Check out the ornament making contest at Brooke Pottery!

Airbrush tattoos and balloon artists will add to the fun.  Some of these activities will require the purchase of tickets.  See below for details. Of course, the car show will be in full swing on Tennessee Avenue from 6-9pm.    Shops and restaurants will be open late, too!

“The Lake Mirror Story” Ever wonder about the history of the Lake Mirror Promenade?  Curious about what’s behind the iron gates on the Loggia? Well, on July 3 from 6-9pm Historic Lakeland will open the gates and provide a fascinating 22 minute video of how the Promenade came to be, how it almost perished and the efforts to restore it.  Catch the video anytime as it will be played continuously from 6-9pm. Enjoy tasty samples from The Terrace Grille on the Loggia.

A map of activities will be available at stores so you can be sure to hit everything at least once before the fireworks.

Remember, throughout Downtown you’ll find stations to drop off canned goods  and non-perishable food items for VISTE, as well as items for our troops in Operation Drop Zone. THE GENERAL STORE, FASTFRAME and J. ROWAN ART GALLERIES are still accepting donations of items to send to our soldiers currently serving so bravely in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, on this First Friday, July 3, THE GENERAL STORE will provide supplies for folks to write letters of thanks and support to send along. Downtownn guests may also bring pre-written cards and letters.

After the fireworks, be sure to stop by the Garden Bistro next to Hollis Garden where Al & Rich from The Sofa Kings will be playing from 9:30 PM until 11:00 PM.
