What’s Happening at March First Friday

Step right up! The circus is coming to town.March-First-Friday

Our First Friday on March 4 is sponsored by the Lakeland Association of Realtors, and the theme is “A Night at the Circus.”

This month’s event will be one for the record books—literally. Bring the whole family to see the sword swallower who holds a Guinness world record, as well as the world’s smallest horse.

Other performances you’ll see during “A Night at the Circus” include clowns, jugglers, aerial artists and belly dancers. There also will be performances by Heidi Herriott’s Circus Show and the Pound Puppies Dog Show.

Kids will enjoy bounce houses, carnival games, face painting, pony rides and balloon artists.

Be sure to purchase a ticket for the Victorian Playhouse Raffle, where you could win a beautiful 6’ x 8’ playhouse. The playhouse will be on display at First Friday so you can see it for yourself. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit The Porch Light, a Lakeland organization working to end child sex trafficking. Tickets also can be purchased online here. Only 500 tickets will be sold.

In addition to Realtors, the Lakeland Association of Realtors also includes members from allied industries, such as mortgage brokers and pest control companies.

“All of the members deal with the community a lot,” says CEO Barbara Barnes. “Our theme for membership is ‘Realtors make good neighbors.’”

Because First Friday is such an “excellent community event,” LAR members thought it would be a good avenue for “showcasing our involvement in the community,” Barnes says.

All activities during First Friday will be free. Members will have booths set up in Munn Park and will give away cotton candy, snow cones, and other treats and promotional items.

LAR adds its March First Friday sponsorship to an impressive list of community service projects it participates in annually.

Barnes says LAR is best known for its annual room makeover project it conducts in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Lakeland & Mulberry. Each year, the partners select four children to receive bedroom makeovers. Rooms to Go donates the furniture, and LAR members donate money to purchase additional items.

Another popular project LAR members support is a clothing drive for residents who use Polk Works’ employment assistance services. LAR collected more than 5,000 pieces of professional clothing in 2015 for people in need of clothing that is appropriate for job interviews.

Be sure to come downtown March 4 to take part in this event-packed evening, and take a moment to learn about the many contributions of the Lakeland Association of Realtors while you’re at it. See you at the circus!
