First Friday – General Information

First Friday is one of the most popular recurring events in Lakeland. Every month, on the first Friday of the month (hence the name), people from all over the community converge in Downtown Lakeland for an evening of FREE family friendly entertainment, activities, live music, art receptions, a car show, and, of course, the chance to check out a great, locally-owned restaurant or retail establishment. Each month, First Friday has a different theme, and special activities are provided to complement the theme.

February 3, 2012 – “Downtown Loves the Arts” - Enjoy the visual and performing arts throughout Downtown Lakeland on February 3rd.  From school children to professionals, photography to painting and dancing and singing, local talent will be showcased throughout Downtown.  Who knows, you may pick up a tip or two, or discover a hidden talent. As the night progresses visit the growing number of venues regularly offering entertainment.  You’ll fall in love with Downtown!

March 2, 2012 - “Skyward Festival” Sponsored by Sun-n-Fun- Let your fancies take flight and your imaginations soar during this First Friday.  Sun ‘N Fun brings a taste of their world of aviation to Downtown.  You’ll have fun with paper airplanes and helicopter pyrotechnics, hot air balloons, flyovers, and other flight-related demonstrations and displays.  Of course, there’ll be great music through out Downtown, including a big band in Munn Park.

April 6, 2012 – “‘Get the Message’ Media Night” - Area students try their hands at casting the marketing spell through videos and radio ads promoting Downtown Lakeland.  Their work will be presented in hopes of getting your ”People’s Choice” vote for a chance to be aired on Bright House television or one of the Big 4 Radio stations.  We’re hoping for some hysterical outtakes along with the finished products!  As always, there will be music and activities in the street and shops and restaurants will be open late for your enjoyment.

May 4, 2012 – “Public Works Night” – Presented with the City of Lakeland’s Public Works Department, this is always a family favorite.  Who can resist gawking at heavy equipment and machinery and finding out “how they do those things they do.”  There will be lots of displays, demonstrations, giveaways, entertainment and music throughout Downtown.

Businesses and non-profit organizations participating in First Friday are members of the Downtown Lakeland Partnership, Inc. or approved exhibitors. First Friday does not hire food vendors or allow unapproved businesses to set up during the event. Events are paid for by dues collected from DLP members. Funding for First Friday comes from DLP fundraising activities, sponsorships and support from the City of Lakeland.
