Pucker up Rally
Time: 6:30 pm
READ Lakeland\\\'s Kiss The Pig Campaign will kick-off March 5, 2010 with the Pucker-up Rally in Munn Park beginning at 6:30 P.M. during First Friday. We have eight eager candidates who want to kiss that \\\"real live pig.\\\" They are: Frank Buzzanca (CF Industries), Loretta Cameron (West Area Adult School), Stacy Campbell-Domineck (Polk Works), Michael Folsom (Folsom Construction), Stan Piotrowski (Watson Clinic), Marion Pugh (Patchwork Pig), Anu Saxena (ASC Geosciences, Inc.) Don Selvage (The NCT Group CPA\\\'s).These competitors will be campaigning and raising funds for READ Lakeland\\\'s adult literacy program. READ Lakeland is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives through literacy in Lakeland. Since 1995, READ Lakeland has been serving adults in Lakeland and Polk County who want to improve their reading skills or learn to read. READ Lakeland offers one-to-one tutoring and small group instruction to help adults in need of assistance in reading, writing, math, and English speaking skills. ALL of our services are FREE to our learners. Twenty-four percent of adults in Lakeland are functionally illiterate. Additionally, another 13% or more are non-English speakers, and this non-English-speaking population continues to grow. Being functionally illiterate as an adult not only severely limits employment opportunities; it makes it impossible for a parent to read to a child, to comprehend medication instructions and precautions, to follow transportation directions, or to accomplish many of the myriad tasks that we readers take for granted. There is a clear connection between illiteracy and poverty; Lakeland\\\'s poverty level, at approximately 15%, is higher than the national average of 13%. Please join us to kick off this great cause! Any questions please contact Lynda Wolverton (KTP Event Chair) 644-7719, or Beth Hesseltine (Development Director), 619-6796; Beth.Hesseltine@msn.com

* Historic Home and Garden Tour
Historic Home and Garden Tour
Time: 11:00 am
The 7th Annual Lake Morton Neighborhood Association Historic Home and Garden Tour will be held on Saturday, March 20th, 2010 from 11am till 4pm. The first tour was held in the fall of 2004, on the day of the second hurricane to hit Lakeland. We then made the decision to move the tour to the spring. The event has highlighted Lakeland first suburb, an area adjacent to the beautiful downtown area. Most of the homes in this area are from the 1920’s to 1950’s, with excellent examples of bungalow architecture. Many have been restored to their original style and some have been uniquely updated. We provide trolley transportation, but the neighborhood is also great for walking. Thanks to a team of devoted volunteers, supporters and homeowners, and the enthusiasm of those that attend, this event has become a highlight of spring in Lakeland. This year the tour will originate at the Hauger Bunch Realtors office at 415 S. Kentucky Ave. Formerly a private home, this historic building has beautiful woodwork throughout, plus a great view of Lake Morton. Another new feature of the tour is that the trolleys will not only ride through the neighborhood, going to the featured homes, but will also run through downtown Lakeland, with two stops along the way. This will make it possible for participants to enjoy a tour of Munn Park hosted by Jim Studiale and John White from Historic Lakeland. This tour paints a picture of how the city originally developed. Also, this is a great opportunity to visit the shops and restaurants in the downtown area. Tickets will be available at Brooke Pottery, Fast Frame and Home Essentials in the month before the tour for $12 and on www.historichometours.com for out of town guests or those wishing to pay with credit cards. Proceeds from the tour benefit the association, plus several local charities. For more information, go to www.lmna.org . This year the tour begins at Hauger-Bunch Realtors, 415 S. Kentucky Avenue just off of Lake Morton Drive in Downtown Lakeland, FL. and includes Historic Munn Park in the heart of Downtown. Trolley transportation is available for the tour route. Proceeds benefit Agape Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and Phillip O\'Brien Elementary School. For more information visit our website www.LMNA.org Tickets are $12 and may be purchased in advance at one of these fine downtown shops through Friday, March 19th: Brooke Pottery 223 N Kentucky Avenue FastFrame 117 S Kentucky Avenue Home Essentials 314 N Kentucky Avenue
