September is Healthy Aging Month!

The focus for Healthy Aging Month this September will be to help facilitate local level Healthy Aging® promotions. CWI has developed a variety of materials including a discussion guide, several videos, Healthy Aging® Guides, and the book Healthy Aging…Inspirational Letters from Americans to support this effort. All of these materials are becoming very popular with hospitals, senior centers and other community outreach groups who find them useful in communicating the “wellness” message of Healthy Aging.

What You Can Do

Create local events to support Healthy Aging® Month. Suggestions for activities and programs you can bring to your community or special group follow.

1. Create Healthy Aging® Open House: Contact your local YMCA/YWCA to offer assistance in setting up a Healthy Aging® Open House. Use our Healthy Aging Discussion Guide with video or DVD to help organize a “course” on Healthy Aging. As a benefit to the Y’s, older adults can be invited to try out the fitness equipment with the objective of getting them involved in a regular “Y” exercise program.

Invite members of your medical community to participate such as a gerontologist, nutritionist, psychologist or social worker, retirement advisor and physical therapist or other spokesperson. Pass out Healthy Aging® brochures to every attendee.

3. Set up a Writing Workshop. Use the “Write From the Heart” educational kit as a stimulus. Invite a local author, newspaper editor or continuing education writing instructor to be a guest speaker. Encourage participants to write family histories, poetry or letters to friends or family as part of a course on mental wellness. A perfect compliment to this workshop is a review and discussion of the book, Healthy Aging…Inspirational Letters from Americans.

4. Create a Healthy Aging® Bulletin Board: Invite your group to share their secrets for Healthy Aging® by writing up a 200 word or less “secret for positive aging” on a 3 x 5 card. Create a bulletin board with the headline “OUR SECRETS FOR HEALTHY AGING®”. Post the tips on the board. Have a Healthy Aging® get together and ask the writers to read their tips. Vote on the best one and give a prize, such as our book, Healthy Aging…Inspirational Letters from Americans.

5. Create an Intergenerational Program: Set up a program with the local PTA to encourage inter-generational participation. Stage an open house at the local senior center on Grandparent’s Day. Publicize the day through a flyer sent home in the school children’s backpacks. Have grandparents read selections to grandchildren from Healthy Aging …Inspirational Letters from Americans.

6. Feature Healthy Aging in your Book Study Group: Feature Healthy Aging …Inspirational Letters from Americans as September selection in local book discussion groups. This is a perfect way to present and discuss how older Americans define Healthy Aging and what they suggest for future generations. Have participants bring a 200 word essay of their own to read and post on a bulletin board with the title: OUR SECRETS FOR HEALTHY AGING®!

7. Set up a Healthy Aging Night: Show any one of the Healthy Aging videos/DVDs, invite a local gerontologist to lead a discussion of positive aging, using Healthy Aging … Inspirational Letters from Americans as a catalyst. Pass out Healthy Aging® brochures.

8. Raise Funds for Your Organization: Order Healthy Aging materials at quantity discount and resell at retail price. Keep the profits to help fund special projects.

Whole Health Fair- Friday Sept 24 2-5pm

What is “Whole” Health? Whole Health emcompasses the mind, body and spirit in leading a healthy life. Whole Health is how you think, how you move, how you eat, how you breathe, and how you believe.

Senior Helpers has partnered with Azalea Park- a Holiday Retirement Community- to host a Whole Health Fair on Friday Sept. 24 from 2-5pm with a panel discussion of local professionals from 3-4pm. There will be live music, free food and guided tours of the facility. There will be local businesses and services set up to help you live a healthy and whole life!

Fall Art Class Registration Under Way

Registration is already under way for Polk Museum of Art’s Fall Art Classes! During the Fall session, which runs October 5 – November 11, we offer classes for both children and adults, and for all experience levels.

Two options are offered for children and families: After School Art and Drawing, Painting, & Sculpture (ages 5-13).

For teens and adults, courses will be offered in Art History, Mixed Media Assemblage, Acrylic Painting, Yoga Among the Art, Digital Photography 101, Intermediate Digital Photography, Mixed Media Self Portraits, Figure Drawing, and Chinese Brush Painting.

A class in Film Acting will also be available for ages 8 to adult.

The dust has settled after some building repairs this week! Now we have a beautiful, freshly painted ceiling and bright, newly painted walls. The store feels fresh and new. Come on down and see! This Friday is a great time to come see the new shop – it’s First Friday 6-9 PM. This month First Friday is all about Back to School. It’s Teacher Appreciation Night at Brooke Pottery. If you’re a teacher, you can register for a drawing to win a basket of teaching supplies and various goodies. For you non-teachers, bring in a new school supply to donate and receive an entry into a drawing for a gorgeous 8″ raku vase by Roundtree Pottery. It’s beautiful! And you’re helping the children. Both drawings happen at 8 PM, but we’re accepting school supply donations all day.

Tonight, we’ll also announce the winner of our kid’s art holiday ornament contest at 7 PM. Whose art will be immortalized on this year’s Brooke Pottery ornament? Come find out!

This year Downtown is partnering with the Polk County Builders Association and its members to create a huge First Friday event. Up and down Kentucky Ave. you’ll find art vendors and art receptions. The Art of Better Living is brought to you by the Polk County Builders Association and their members. Visit Munn Park to find PCBA members who can help you select a builder, get mortgage information, install new countertops, renovate a room, install a pool, buy insurance, put down new flooring, landscape your yard, remodel your home, hire a decorator or put in an all brick patio. The list is endless! PCBA members are dedicated to the Art of Better Living everyday!

Downtown Lakeland’s October First Friday will also feature an art show!

The DLP is looking for artists, in all mediums, to exhibit their work along Kentucky Avenue in Downtown Lakeland during the October First Friday. This will be a great opportunity to reach the First Friday crowds and perhaps kick off the holiday buying season a little early!

Items exhibited must be made by the artist. If you are interested, please contact us no later than September 15th.

PMoA Handing Out Free Art Supplies for School Age Children at Family Day

Join PMoA for Family Day, our annual fun open house! This year’s theme is “Going Global” and the day will be filled with all sorts of fun activities and entertainment from around the world. It’s all FREE! Plus, the Museum will be giving away bags of art supplies to the first 500 school age children in the building.

The day will include performances by Didgeridoo Down Under, magician Luis Campaneria, Tampa Taiko Japanese drumming, and the Kuumba Dancers & Drummers. Visitors can also find balloon bending, face painting, a community sculpture project, a global stick game, portrait sketches, a bake sale, and tables about countries from all over the world.

Art activities will include African masks, origami lanterns, Japanese kimono dolls and carp kites, Morroccan good luck hands, Australian didgeridoos, and Chinese good luck door hangers.

Family Day is sponsored by an anonymous donor, BCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc., MIDFLORIDA Credit Union, and Mosaic. Additional support is provided by The Ledger.

PMoA to Offer Workshops for Adults on First Saturdays

Do you feel like the kids get to have all the fun on Saturdays? Well, Polk Museum of Art is introducing workshops just for adults on the first Saturday of the month. Try your hand at a variety of mediums and techniques while diving a bit deeper into one of the current exhibitions. Each workshop will be lead by Rick Olivo and will begin with a brief tour of the current exhibition, followed by a hands-on workshop reflecting the themes, styles, or subject matter you just learned about.

September 4 - Painting with Acrylics (relating to the exhibition Loïs Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color)

October 2 - Printmaking (relating to the exhibition Modern Masters)

November 6 - Clay (relating to the exhibition Ancient Art of the Americas)
