An inveterate adventure traveler, EJ Jensen made the hop from standard mountain biking to mountain bike trials in 2008 in Okinawa Japan.  Since then, he has been driven to hone the precision skills and balance necessary to excel in urban trials, and has enjoyed sharing his passion for the little-known sport with the many people he meets along his journey. Though primarily focused on urban trials, with cities in North America and Europe providing the obstacle courses (or “puzzles” as he sees them), EJ has recently branched out into natural trials as well, competing in the Southridge Fontana winter series on the rocky terrain of southern California.  He is currently touring the US promoting the culture of cycling through demonstrations at bicycle themed events.

I would like to know why there is no mention of the Polk Pride entertainment that has been added to the June 3rd Biking First Friday. Polk Pride is a part of the Gay and Lesbian Pride month celebration and families expecting a “family atmosphere” should be advised of this venue being a part of the First Friday events. No gay bashing here just would appreciate some respect for those who would choose not to participate in events of this type.

My response to Susan is that gay and lesbian people are members of families, too…and have families themselves.  I think insinuating that the Polk Pride events are something inappropriate for a “family atmosphere” actually is “gay bashing.”  I don’t think it’s too difficult to look beyond the Polk Pride participants being gay or lesbian and see them as human beings and members of our community, too.  People can choose to just appreciate the Polk Pride events this evening as a fun and interesting contribution to the diverse cultural atmosphere that downtown provides during First Friday events.  Alternatively, if people do not wish to participate in or observe the Polk Pride events, it will be very simple to hang out somewhere other than Munn Park this evening.  First Friday will be happening all over the many city blocks that make up the downtown area, so there should be something for everyone…even the LGBT community, finally!
