Rocky Horror-Oct 30, 31

October 26th, 2009 6:58 pm | by

RHPSLAKELAND (FL). . . Polk Theatre and The Lipstick Players present The 5th Annual Rocky Horror Picture Show Experience.

Released in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show introduced audiences to Dr. Frank-N-Furter: a devious and flamboyant, hedonist transvestite, pansexual scientist (played by a then unknown Tim Curry). On a dark and stormy evening, during the Annual Transylvanian Convention, Dr. Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation, Rocky, to crowd of freaks, and the film’s naïve heroes Brad Majors, and Brad’s fiancée, Janet Weiss.

Still in limited release nearly 34 years after its premiere, it has the longest-running theatrical release in film history. It gained notoriety as a midnight movie in 1977 when audiences began participating with the film in theaters across the United States.

“This year is going to be different,” said Daniel Ballard, the shows Production Director. “We’ve put a lot of effort into making the action in front of the film as clever, and as close to the actual film, as possible. There’s going be a much grander and more theatrical feel to it than in years past. I think the hardcore fans are going to go nuts!”

As always, audiences are encouraged to dress up, shout-back, and be part of the show. ‘Freak Kits’ (which include various household items that are either thrown at the screen, dumped on the audience, or both) will be sold in the lobby. The preshow begins at 8PM both nights and will feature local musicians, dancers, and artists. Everyone should also come out early and enjoy some shopping and dining in our beautiful downtown Lakeland. In accordance with the cult tradition, the film will start at Midnight and end before 2AM.

This event is a joint benefit for Polk Theatre and Florida Dance Theatre, and will begin at 8:00PM on Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st. Tickets are $15 and should be purchased early because both shows will sell out.
